Your PDF is processed entirely in your browser using PDF.js and the docx library. No file is uploaded to any server.
What does the PDF to Word converter do?
The FreePDF PDF to Word tool converts a PDF document into an editable Microsoft Word DOCX file. It extracts the text content, images, and structural layout from the PDF and reconstructs them in a format that Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice can open and edit.
Unlike cloud-based converters that upload your documents to remote servers, FreePDF performs the entire conversion inside your browser using PDF.js for reading and docx for generating the Word file. Your document never leaves your device.
How to convert PDF to Word

What FreePDF PDF to Word can do
- Extracts all selectable text from PDF pages
- Embeds images from the PDF into the Word document
- Preserves paragraph structure and basic formatting
- Handles multi-page PDFs of any length
- Works entirely in your browser — no file uploads
- Free, always — no account needed
Privacy — your PDF stays on your device
When you convert a PDF to Word using FreePDF, the file is loaded into browser memory using the File API. PDF.js reads the document structure locally, and the docx library builds the Word file in memory. The resulting DOCX is then offered as a download directly from your browser.
No PDF content is sent to FreePDF servers or any third party. You can verify this by opening your browser devtools → Network tab and confirming that no file data is transmitted during conversion.

Known limitations
FreePDF is honest about what PDF to Word conversion can and cannot do:
- Complex multi-column layouts may reflow in Word — this is a fundamental PDF-to-DOCX limitation
- Scanned PDFs (image-only) require OCR first — use the OCR PDF tool before converting
- Custom embedded fonts may fall back to system fonts in the DOCX
- Interactive PDF form fields are converted to static text
- PDF annotations and comments are not transferred to DOCX
